At my School I head the Nerf Society and we work with the Zombie Apocalypse Prevention Society to host Zaps. I have found it extremely helpful to make a facebook group for registering Nerf dart symbols.

The idea is to make it easier to identify the owner of fired darts and to facilitate the return of darts that had been lost but now are found. Simply get members to post a picture of a symbol that they have marked on there dart, such as a smiley face or a triforce, on the facebook group. Another good symbol idea is color coding the end of your dart with a permanent marker. I use red myself.

Another idea which can be a stand alone idea or in addition to the above is when a player registers for a HvZ game there picture should be of there Dart Symbol.

Overall I've found it works best on a first come first served basis for registering your symbols.

Personally, I just take a sharpie and either write my HvZ ID # on the streamline, or else marker in my cell phone number.

I just buy bulk darts from craigslist and flea markets, and accept that I'm going to lose a lot of darts.

I'm a blowgunner, so I carry a box of 50 taggers and 50 whistlers with me at all times, and it would be way to much work to mark all of them with anything to identify them.

By just rubbing a marker on the bottom of my darts I marked well over 100 darts. easy to do in the span of sitting down and watching a movie.

At UoB we generally encourage players to come up with some dart mark unique to them. Mine is to take a marker and colour in half a dart, I know others who do the tips with their initials, or other such things.

At UMBC we keep a dart marking registry online in the form of an open Google Spreadsheet that any of our players can edit with their dart information.

In addition we hold on to darts returned to us and place each dart in their own little baggy with the marking written on it.

However, we have plans in place to integrate these services with our server software so that players can more easily search through dart marking, visually see what the dart looks like, and determine if the club is in possession of any of their darts, and if so, how many we have.

If your mods and other people are down with sorting darts and keeping track, I say go for it.
Personally, I carry a ton of ammo, so ammo loss is always factored in. I'm sure others would like getting their darts back though, and marking them is as easy as a squiggly line.

What we do is encourage players to label their ammo and to put any ammo they find in a dropbox outside the HvZ office. This box remains there until two weeks after the game at which point marked ammo is stashed for mod use in future games and unmarked ammo is split between the mods.

We are also moving towards making the ammo box permanent so that ammo remains in it and it's brought to all nerf club events

I would suggest having a group of people either those who are mods or a seprate group who go to engagement areas and find the darts.
Along with the dart mark registry you should be able to sort them fast. Or can intigrate them into the mission(cache or ammo drop missions.) if the darts are unmarked then they could be used for this sort of thing entirely. But I always mark them and if I am using my mod darts  bring a magnet ( I use small ball berrings to weight the tip and a decently powerful magnet on a stick helps with recovery).

EDIT!!! Sorry for poor spelling I was watching my daughter trying to build a castle with her blocks....further note she was sucessful.

Thread was necroed but I always mark ammo since I do a lot of shooting, in a lot of situations (training, minigames) other than real HVZ, and my darts are typically not interchangeable with the masses. I have guns that require certain types of darts, certain codes of foam and certain tips, etc. for maximum performance and I have high standards for game darts for reliability, so I am not good with my (often discontinued and non-replaceable W-code Whiteout) darts getting "borrowed" and worn any faster than they already are.

Ammo can cost more than you think. I used to not bother with marking darts, but now I know it is definitely worth the time for HVZ and stock darts. 72/75 rounds from hasbro/Nerf at retail can easily be $20, as much dough as a new alpha setup, or a good used pede... so it's quite foolish to not put the time in to mark them and recover as many as possible.

We have a facebook group for the game and there is always a dart marking thread. In fact, I am about to start the one for this game right now.
