I need some motivational ideas for my classmates and friends to help me get them into, and excited about, HvZ.

Have you tried a whip?

Failing that maybe show them videos from other games run and get them excited about how awesome the game can be.

A good work out tape motivates me a ton!  The Regis Filbin work out is one of the best, although you could just stick with a palates tape.

I nominate this as Thread of the Month!

Cmdrmack: How do you know he wasn't wanting to get his friends excited.

I would say, have a day or two having volunteers dress up as zombies, make up and all, and just walk around campus. They would explain the concept of the game to everyone they came across as well as direct them to the videos . . . I mean, documentaries of recorded zombie outbreaks.

Also, I second the nomination.

What we usually do at Goucher is sit outside the student center and scream at people until they agree to play.

(the best part is that this isn't a joke-post)

Nomination thirded

The most important parts are the hats and heckling.  This is one of my favorite parts of organizing a game of HvZ.  Chris and I used to put on funny hats and as people walked by, we would say things like, "What do you think about the War in Iraq?"  However they answer we would say, "Then you'd love Humans Vs Zombies!"  Works like a charm.

Do nerf capture the flag games first. Once people start seeing how fun it is to shoot each other they'll want to do it all over campus. It could also help you reach potential mods. Also, for nerf capture the flag you can probably go through campus recreation instead of the administration if you are just going to use a field. This means it's way easier to set up.
Also, youtube videos. Find the ones with more action and not so much talking. You can explain things more fully later on.

A player in our game climbed on top of the roof of the financial aid building so the administration got scared and said "you're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air"

We've got ours trained like Pavlov dogs - ring a bell and they all flinch and aim thier nerf guns wildly in all directions.

But seriously, we wear our headbands around ahead of time and hand out fliers. We also do a lot of other normal advertising, and show the documentary and our own videos at orientations sessions when everyone is standing around waiting to have their weapons checked/hand in liability waivers.

The vast majority of people I've talked to have gotten extremely excited about this game without much convincing.

Our advertising was to make it an immersive environment as suggested. So we put up the "quarantined area" and "The end is near. The dead are rising" posters around campus. We also have 3 articles in our school newspaper that we wrote to explain plot, and they'll be covering one after the event. Then we reached out to the residence halls and got them excited to promote it to their floors as a floor event. Soon we'll be doing the same for the fraternities, sororities, and student orgs. Get one person in an org excited for it, and ask them to register their friends.

Threaten to hose them down with mace if they don't play Tongue

Get some awards going for best players etc. If people have something to play for rather than just the game itself, more will join in.
